Planet with four suns discovered

Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 07:10 AM

We used to watch movies showing planets with multiple suns, and although theoretically this would be difficult to happen due to extremely complicated gravitational forces, it looks that a team of amateur and professional astronomers has just discovered one!

The planet is located about 5000 light years away from Earth and is orbiting two suns and being orbited by two distant stars. It is intriguing to investigate further how such a complex system can exist and what the implications on the planet are.

Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 10:10 AM

Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid (about 300 meters) which is going to approach earth in about 2036. While initially the probability NASA has announced was 2.7% to strike Earth, later on it was considered to be 1 in 45000.

The Mayan ‘DoomsDay’ has probably been calculated wrong

Monday, October 8, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 09:10 PM

Which means do not wait for a real ‘DoomsDay’ to come on 21-12-2012… All this hype for nothing?

According to a recent research, the end of the world date of ‘21-12-2012’ as allegedly been predicted by the Mayan calendar, may be off by 50 to 100 years. And why is that? Because to convert the ancient Mayan calendar to the Gregorian (modern) calendar, scholars used a constant called GMT (or Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correlation) which is calculated based on astronomical events.

Incredible animals that can survive in Space

Monday, October 8, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 07:10 PM

They are called tardigrades or water bears and they are probably the only creatures that can survive in the extreme conditions of Space.

Tardigrades are strange microscopic, multi-cellular animals. About 750 species are known to the scientific world. They always live in water: in the oceans and in ponds but most typically in small droplets of water bound by mosses or lichens. So you can bet that some tardigrades will be very close to you, usually in a distance of less than 10 meters !

How a few simple actions could fix our world today

Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 08:10 PM

Today I was wondering why some things cannot change today, even if most people realize that what is happening is wrong. And it was in one of those bright moments that I realized that the solution could be very simple and yet very few are ready to take this step.

People do not realize that the power is in their hands and not in the hands of the few.

Let’s state how a few of the problems today could have been solved:

Why far-right parties in Europe increase in power?

Wednesday, October 3, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 06:10 AM

Dark clouds are gathering above Europe and it is not only the imminent collapse of the financial system. One government after the other fail to protect and help the citizens to prosper, giving priority to bailing out banks and financial institutions. Citizens see that and see the incompetent of the ones that govern them. They see how political corruption is spreading like cancer in the whole Europe.

Time travel is not impossible

Tuesday, October 2, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 09:10 PM

Even though in the minds of most time travel is science fiction, it turns out that jumps through time are possible – at least according to the laws of physics.

In a recent interview for the movie Looper, Dr Edward Farhi, director of the Center for Theoretical Physics at MIT says ‘There is no question that you can skip into the future’.

Bees & the Doomsday

Tuesday, October 2, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 10:10 AM

Albert Einstein, allegedly said that “if the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, man would have only four years to live”. Einstein has said many things and not everything was correct, however this one looks that is very close to reality.

About 80 to 90% of pollination happens because of the bees. Honeybees carry the pollen from one tree to another as they fly. And although corn, wheat, rice and other grains rely on wind to spread their pollen, almost any other flowering plant relies on the bees. It is estimated than almost one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees.

Incredible Memory

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 07:09 AM

There are a few people in the world that cannot forget anything, literally anything. This condition is called hyperthymesia which makes your brain to work like a super video recorder. What a brilliant ‘medical condition’ to have …

Usually most people do not remember details and what exactly they did years ago, unless it was something very important, something imprinted vividly in our memory.

Ethics & Business

Monday, September 24, 2012
Dr Ioannis Syrigos @ 09:09 AM

In my opinion, most of the problems that have brought economy to the state that it is now have to do with ethical issues.

One such example is when you sell a product or service to a value a lot more than its actual cost. You can do that either because you know that people will buy it or because you have a monopoly or just because you got the chance to do.

In the same way it is unethical to loan someone money that you know he won’t be able to repay you. Isn’t that a common pattern that has appeared frequently in the last decade?
