Planet with four suns discovered

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 @ 07:10 AM
Dr Ioannis Syrigos

We used to watch movies showing planets with multiple suns, and although theoretically this would be difficult to happen due to extremely complicated gravitational forces, it looks that a team of amateur and professional astronomers has just discovered one!

The planet is located about 5000 light years away from Earth and is orbiting two suns and being orbited by two distant stars. It is intriguing to investigate further how such a complex system can exist and what the implications on the planet are.

Which means do not wait for a real ‘DoomsDay’ to come on 21-12-2012… All this hype for nothing?

According to a recent research, the end of the world date of ‘21-12-2012’ as allegedly been predicted by the Mayan calendar, may be off by 50 to 100 years. And why is that? Because to convert the ancient Mayan calendar to the Gregorian (modern) calendar, scholars used a constant called GMT (or Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correlation) which is calculated based on astronomical events.

Dr Ioannis Syrigos

Even though in the minds of most time travel is science fiction, it turns out that jumps through time are possible – at least according to the laws of physics.

In a recent interview for the movie Looper, Dr Edward Farhi, director of the Center for Theoretical Physics at MIT says ‘There is no question that you can skip into the future’.

You thought that Star Trek WARP space travelling was a fantasy? Well you were wrong …

Dr Ioannis Syrigos

I am sure most of people who love science would have watched the Legacy of Star Trek series.

One of the advanced technological concepts mentioned in the series is the WARP engine which allows travelling with speeds greater than the speed of light.

Well, recently NASA scientists think that ‘warp drive is realistic possibility and that in the far future humans could regularly travel faster than the speed of light’.
